Throwing Sadie’s 2nd Birthday party wasn’t something I spent many a moon thinking about (very unlike her first birthday). It really crept up on me this time around. I tried thinking of different “themes” but it’s hard with a two year old. There’s not really anything definitive that she loves. I guess animals. I could have had a zoo themed or farm themed party I suppose. But then I would have had to have actual animals here right?! Yeah, hindsight and all… I’m still into the theme that I chose. And that theme was…. breakfast.
Ha, weird right? My reasoning for this was because at 2 years old you never know when the nap is going to happen. And we had 3 other little girls over all around the same age who I’m sure all have varying nap schedules. So trying to keep that in mind I figured you can’t go wrong with early morning. Most toddlers are at their absolute best in the mornings before nap/lunch time hits. And this way everyone (parents included) could party it up hard and then head home for a nice nap.
Hopefully that is exactly what all of our guests did.
The one drawback to having a breakfast party is that you as the host/hostess need to wake up at the crack of dawn to get everything prepped, set up and cooked before the party starts at 9:30. But it all worked out, and I did try to prep as much as I could the day before so I could lessen my load on the morning of.
I had a plethora, if you will, of breakfast type foods to offer. I stayed away from eggs because eggs are gross if they are not served hot and I don’t have buffet style warmers lying around the house. So what I did do is set up mini boxes of kids cereal with a couple of options of milk, yogurt cups, funfetti pancakes, muffins, toast, bacon, sausage, fruit, tater tots and french toast triangles served in maple syrup dipping cups. We also made mimosas and bloody mary for the parents and water, milk and juice for the wee ones.
And to my surprise by the end of the party most of the food was gone.
Ok, enough about the food. The kids partied. Hard.
At this age the little ones like playing in each others company much more than they enjoy playing together. But the excitement of having 4 littles running amok with free range generated enough energy to pull a tank. Or stay up waaay past nap time, which is exactly what happened in this scenario.
I think that maybe even the parents got a chance to enjoy themselves. Which typically is not an easy feat to accomplish.
And I just want to take a moment and mention how happy and grateful I am to have met people up here in our new home that I’ve come to care about so much. It’s not easy making new friends as an adult, so I really do count my blessings that my circle up here is growing and I have a group of people I can complain to about teething and refusing vegetables : )
And sometimes girlfriend needs to take a “Lena Dunham” moment and eat a cupcake in bed alone.
And that’s a wrap folks! Happy 2nd year Sadie!!
