A Breakfast Birthday Party

Throwing Sadie’s 2nd Birthday party wasn’t something I spent many a moon thinking about (very unlike her first birthday).  It really crept up on me this time around.  I tried thinking of different “themes” but it’s hard with a two year old.  There’s not really anything definitive that she loves.  I guess animals.  I could have had a zoo themed or farm themed party I suppose.  But then I would have had to have actual animals here right?!  Yeah, hindsight and all… I’m still into the theme that I chose.  And that theme was…. breakfast.

Ha, weird right?  My reasoning for this was because at 2 years old you never know when the nap is going to happen.  And we had 3 other little girls over all around the same age who I’m sure all have varying nap schedules.  So trying to keep that in mind I figured you can’t go wrong with early morning.  Most toddlers are at their absolute best in the mornings before nap/lunch time hits.  And this way everyone (parents included) could party it up hard and then head home for a nice nap.

Hopefully that is exactly what all of our guests did.

The one drawback to having a breakfast party is that you as the host/hostess need to wake up at the crack of dawn to get everything prepped, set up and cooked before the party starts at 9:30.  But it all worked out, and I did try to prep as much as I could the day before so I could lessen my load on the morning of.

I had a plethora, if you will, of breakfast type foods to offer.  I stayed away from eggs because eggs are gross if they are not served hot and I don’t have buffet style warmers lying around the house.  So what I did do is set up mini boxes of kids cereal with a couple of options of milk, yogurt cups, funfetti pancakes, muffins, toast, bacon, sausage, fruit, tater tots and french toast triangles served in maple syrup dipping cups.  We also made mimosas and bloody mary for the parents and water, milk and juice for the wee ones.

And to my surprise by the end of the party most of the food was gone.

Ok, enough about the food.  The kids partied.  Hard.

At this age the little ones like playing in each others company much more than they enjoy playing together.  But the excitement of having 4 littles running amok with free range generated enough energy to pull a tank.  Or stay up waaay past nap time, which is exactly what happened in this scenario.

I think that maybe even the parents got a chance to enjoy themselves.  Which typically is not an easy feat to accomplish.

And I just want to take a moment and mention how happy and grateful I am to have met people up here in our new home that I’ve come to care about so much.  It’s not easy making new friends as an adult, so I really do count my blessings that my circle up here is growing and I have a group of people I can complain to about teething and refusing vegetables  : )

And sometimes girlfriend needs to take a “Lena Dunham” moment and eat a cupcake in bed alone.

And that’s a wrap folks!  Happy 2nd year Sadie!!

two

Well here we are again.  A year further along and I’m writing about a birthday.  It feels like it was only a few months ago that I was writing about her first birthday.  But alas, it has been an entire year and this past Friday we welcomed Sadie into her 2nd year.

We threw her a small breakfast birthday party over the weekend with a few of her playmates.  It was a great time and I’ll post photos and details soon.  But today I just wanted to celebrate the number 2.

I crept into Sadie’s room while she slept just a day before she turned two.  She looked so peaceful and so beautiful and I couldn’t help myself take an impromptu photo shoot.  I carefully studied all of her features just as I did when she was a sleeping newborn.  The changes she has gone through in such a short amount of time are absolutely remarkable.

I used to sit and try and imagine what she would look like with hair, now she has a silky blond heap of it that she is constantly pushing out of her face.  Her little nostrils used to be so small I feared that if a piece of lint landed in the passage way that she would suffocate.  Her legs and arms were so smooth and soft, now she has a very fine layer of blond hair making it’s way across her arms and legs.  The chubby rolls of her arms and legs are thinning out and turning into muscular legs that she uses to climb, run and jump.

My little baby child, is now more than ever such a big girl.  The way she talks, the speed and steadiness in which she runs, her memory, the way she loves…  For me personally, terrible twos is not something I feel.  I feel much more strongly toward the term terrific twos.  Because this is it.  She is so very truly becoming who she is.  And this is exactly what I’ve been waiting for.  Throughout my pregnancy, and through the entire first year I have thought over and over… who will this little girl be.  And she is finally starting to show me.

And since this is her 2 year post – it’s only natural that I take a look back at how far she’s come.  And since I’m on the sleeping photo kick… I might as well stay with it.

So here is a look at Sadie back at 1 year…

And here she is as a newborn..

Thank you all for following along with us for these past two years.  It’s been fun documenting it all.

And Happy 2nd Birthday to you Sadie Lynn.  Love you madly.

happy visits/birthday/easter

Hectic is a good word to sum up the past month and a half.  Hence, the lack of updates on the blog.  Instead of taking my time and thoughtfully creating an entry for every separate event, I’m going to lump them all together in a giant photo bomb.  Because you know what…  we’ve had new visitors every weekend for the past 5 weekends in a row.  On a few occasions we’ve had 3 different guests in one week.  I only have about half of the people even pictured in these photos and I don’t have much time to write because guess what?  I have to clean up the house from Devin’s birthday, Easter and my brother’s visit all before my parents get here in a few hours for their week-long stay.

I don’t even mind it though.  In fact, I just added another house guest(s) onto the calendar for after my parents’ visit.

Party on Wayne.

at the Natural History Museum in Golden Gate Park during the in-laws visit.

at the Kids Discovery Bay Museum during Auntie Jam-Jam’s visit

celebrating Devin’s birthday with some German beers during Uncle Jared’s visit

Easter is being postponed a day this year to wait for Grandma and Pop-pop’s visit.  But we tried to get into the spirit and dyed some eggs.

Devin was still feeling the spirit of his birthday from the night before.

Hoppy Easter to all of you. :)

rewind

It’s December.  I have photos to post from the company we had starting in mid-November until the end of November.  Late, yes I know.  But I was so tired after we were finally home without guests, I didn’t much feel like trotting online, then the baby got sick, then I got sick, then Devin got sick… so we are all just now kind of coming out of it.  The poor baby has the worst of it, she is still coughing and has a runny nose 24/7.  It’s so sad to see her sick.  But she is seeing the light at the end of the tunnel, and is getting her energy back.  Clearly – since she started walking yesterday.

So. Back to mid-November.  Jamie (my sister) & Stephi (me and Jamie’s oldest friend) came up to SF to visit with us for my birthday!  It was so nice of them to do that because honestly we would probably have just skimmed over my birthday this year if it wasn’t for them.

The plan was to go out dancing, but the 2 nights previous to the girls getting here Sadie was a total nightmare at night.  I’m talking like up 8-10 times a night.  Sometimes crying for over an hour at a time.  Oh lordy, it was the worst ever.  I felt like I had a newborn again, except worse, because I didn’t have all of that newborn baby adrenaline pumping through my body.

So needless to say, we didn’t make it out that first night.

The next night my folks arrived, and they volunteered to stay in with Sadie and let all of us (girls + Devin) go out to a bar.  So we went to our neighborhood Tiki Bar and got some really fancy-umbrella-filled-on-fire-hangover-cocktails.  Totally fun.

Until we got home.  Sadie must have had some type of an internal alarm set to go off every 5 minutes once I got home and into bed.  There’s really nothing like coming home tipsy after a night of much needed care-free fun to be instantly pulled back into the reality that I had a fussy baby that needed me all night.  And then needed to get up at 5:45am.  It was such self-inflicted torture that I’ve learned I can only do that if I’m spending the night away (which I’ve yet to do.)  To be totally honest, I was still recovering from that one night long after Thanksgiving.

And that’s the thick of it.  Life ain’t what it used to be.  I’m living in Sadie’s world now.

baby’s first party

When I was trying to make the plan for Sadie’s birthday I mulled over a few ideas and themes, but came to the realization that she is one, she really doesn’t have a “thing” yet.  Sure, she likes dogs and balls but that’s not really a birthday party worthy theme.  So I just decided to keep it fun.  And I went with rainbow colors.  Rainbow streamers, cupcakes, hats, rainbow flower bouquet and way too many rainbow balloons!  I made a lot of it on my own, but anything I didn’t have the time or expertise to make I ordered from etsy.com.

So, without further ado.  Here it is, Sadie’s very first birthday party.

Happy 1/2 Birthday!

Today marks the day that Sadie is 1/2 a year old.  She is right smack in between being a newborn and a little walking lady.  Six months ago, I was terrified.  I’d never really been around babies, especially newborns and I thought that I’d have no idea how to care for this little infant.  Six months later I feel like wonder woman.  She loves me and needs me and I love her and need her and everything has fallen into sync.

So here’s a look back at where we were six months ago and where we are today.  Look how far we’ve come!

She was so tiny in our arms.  It was near impossible to actually find clothing that fit her, everything just hung off of her little body.

And now she’s our little chunkster.  Gaining over 10 lbs since birth and whole lotta attitude to go along with the rolls.

Happy 1/2 Birthday to my little monkey.  We love her so. – And if you wouldn’t mind we’d love your vote as a 1/2 birthday present.  Click below! Thanks!

weekend vacation

Our birthday weekend vacation was a success!  I booked us a room at the swanky Loew’s Hotel in Santa Monica for the night.  It’s only a short drive away from where we live, but it still felt like a real getaway.  There’s something about waking up with a view of the ocean that is so relaxing.  It was only one night so we tried to do it big.  Our way of doing it big was ordering way too much food from room service and using the mini bar like there was no price tag attached to it.

The view from our balcony…

Sometimes you need a little fluffy hotel bed play & nap…

Sometimes it’s good to be a tourist in your own city.  Take photos like you’ve never seen the landmarks before and walk around exploring.  I’ll be back to Santa Monica probably within the next few days, but it still felt a world away from home for this short weekend.

31

Yesterday was husbands 31st birthday.  This birthday was a far cry from where we were on his 30th birthday.  Let me paint the picture for ya… One year ago, we had just learned that we were pregnant with Sadie.  I booked us a week trip to Oahu, Hawaii.  We spent Devin’s bday laying out on the white sands of Honolulu Beach – Devin drinking frosty beers and me drinking tropical smoothies.  We rented a car and drove around the entire island in a day, stopping off at hidden private beaches, breath-taking views and little mom & pop ice cream shops.

Aaaaand this year… It’s a cold windy day out.  Devin is still sick with bronchitis, the baby has now caught her first cold.  She has a fever, a cough, diarrhea and sounds like she’s drowning in snot.  I haven’t showered in days because I’m too busy taking care of my sick household and I didn’t even get a chance to go get a birthday cake.  We ordered take out and attempted to watch Tron, but the baby was crying too much.

So, as you can see our lives are a bit different.  But the good news is – husband & baby are both feeling much better today and I am taking the family away for the weekend.  I can’t tell you where because it’s still a surprise to Devin.  I mean, it ain’t Hawaii – but I’m hoping it’ll be 10x as memorable.

So to my wonderful best friend and husband Devin – I love you so much.  You make me so happy, you make me feel beautiful, loved and cherished.  You are my world.  Thank you for being you, thank you for being mine and thank you for giving me Sadie.
