No Shirt, No Shoes, No Service Pt.2

This post is very belated.  And I’ll try and make it snappy.  There were so many important and memorable moments in our week long trip to SD with my parents.  So it’s difficult trying to pick out the few great split seconds I captured on camera out of the hundreds I got.  Choices, choices.

Dinner and dessert outside.  Clothing optional.

Sea World.  The only words Sadie muttered all day… “Yay Orca Whale!”

“one, teewoo, free…yay!”

Come on in and take a seat – Mr. Dollhouse Man

Peek a boo Pop pop!!

Watching football with the boys.

Uncle Jared!!!

Favorite exhibit at the San Diego Safari Park, a giant ball water fountain.

No Shirt, No Shoes, No service

Just got back home from what I’m sure will be Sadie’s last free ride on an airplane… she turns 2 in about 6 weeks (eek)!  She and I packed up and spent the past 6 nights and 7 days in sunny San Diego at my folks place.  The trip was very much needed, it had been 6 months since my Dad got to spend time with Sadie :(

I won’t lie… it is not easy traveling alone with a toddler or being away from home with toddler for that long, so I’m not desperate to do it again next week – but it was a beautiful time and such an experience for Sadie.  The happiness she had running around the house and property that I had the pleasure of growing up in was worth the travel x 10 million.

Much like my childhood, Sadie spent her days almost always shirtless, shoeless, pantless or some combination of all three and beyond.  That’s how it’s done out there.  It is no accident that my parents have a sprawling 3 acres of land of which almost all is impeccably landscaped.  It’s a perfect environment to run around barefoot and explore.

Our week at my parents or “Gamma and Pop pop” as Sadie would say, was filled with childhood enjoyment all day everyday.  They took us to Seaworld, Safari Park and Bates Nut Farm but not to overshadow the countless hours we spent swimming in the pool, playing with the hose and eating ice cream and popsicles.  I have to say though, what seemed to have been my dear daughters most favorite past time was a daily chore she diligently helped my mother carry out every…single…morning.  That was feeding the 2 cats Ava & Leo or as Sadie would say “Eba and Eeo”, feeding the dog Apollo (Polloh), and feeding the wild birds and refilling the birdbath.

The days were full and the evenings came early and easily.  Sadie would drift off to sleep and sleep through the night better than I’ve ever seen her do.  She seemed to go to bed completely satisfied and needed an entire night to recharge herself for when morning came.  When morning would break and I would creep into an awake and happy child’s room, she would look up and smile and say, “Mama, I feed birds bird seed?”  Clearly obsessed.

We only got home late last night and I have already ordered a bird feeder and bird bath on Amazon.  Apparently outdoor chores and feeding birds is this girls passion.

As with any trip goes, as much as you love being there, you are always happy to return home afterward.  And we are.  It seems like I’ve got her eating habits back on track – she was thrown off a bit in a new environment and ate a fraction of the food she’d usually intake.  But her sleeping has stayed bountiful (at least in our 1 and only night back).  She actually slept in til 9am this morning, and slept all night… in her own crib.  That’s a definite first for us.  And one that I hope becomes a pattern!

I will have to do a part 2 on this post.  There are far too many photos and I feel like I’m already bordering on too many.  Plus, I haven’t even touched on the fact that I got to see my brother while I was there. Yay Jared!  Anyhoo, I’ll be back soon with more from our week with the ‘rents.  Until then, stay classy San Diego!

catching up…

It feels like the theme for the past 5 days or so has been catching up.  My ahhhhmazing Aunt Marilyn flew into town with her daughter/ my cousin Alanna last week.  Last I saw both of them I was about 4 1/2 months pregnant with Sadie and celebrating my cousin Brian’s wedding in Tennessee.  The last time I saw my cousin Alanna before that, was nearly 14 years ago at a family reunion back east.  She was about 5 or 6 years old.  Saying we needed to catch up on lost time is an understatement.  We basically needed to meet.  But that’s the thing about family.  No matter how long it’s been, you pick up where you left off and everything just falls into place so seamlessly.  Family takes zero effort.  It just feels so natural.

It was the first time Aunt Marilyn and Alanna got to meet Sadie.  And once again, everything just fell into place.  It was as if Sadie has been around them her whole life.  She was loving every minute.

We split our time between LA and SD.  We did all the sight-seeing imaginable in LA and then closed the week out with an epic BBQ at mom and dad’s house in SD.  Nothing beats a little fresh smog-free air, burgers, family and a little pool time.

The trip was short and great.  And I am so looking forward to our next gathering.  I love them so.

I also managed to squeeze in a little breakfast play date with my dear friend Amber.  Amber has been off creating her world of wonderful-ness all around the globe.  She moved away from LA years ago to live in NY and then flew off to London after that!  So, it’s been years… Catching up was a serious necessity.

Aaaand… the BIGGEST part of the weekend (as if all of that wasn’t enough) is that my beautiful sister Jamie got engaged!!

I’m so thrilled for her & her fiance Jason.  It’s going to be a great year leading up to their wedding.  And what a beautiful union those two will make.  I couldn’t be happier.  And neither could she – she is absolutely beaming!  And check out the ring!  Jason spent the last 6 months designing it!

So…  after all of the excitement and catching up.  I had some “catching up” of my own to do… laundry.  And Sadie wanted to help.

Park & Pool

I never really appreciated my hometown while I was growing up there.  Maybe it’s because I moved out of there faster than you can say “eighteenth birthday.”  I was too busy wanting to go out and meet new people and soak up the city life to notice how beautiful and easy life is there.  This trip was a great reminder of what kind of charm a small town can bring.

Mom and I picked up my Uncle Leigh, who lives very close to my parents and we spent an afternoon strolling through Grape Park -  called Grape Park for obvious reasons, as you’ll see below.

I can’t wait for it to really start warming up, but in the meantime we are getting some days that are swim-able.

Poor Berkeley loves the water more than anything in the universe, but she can’t swim.  Lucky for us, she looks even cuter in her neon yellow life vest plus she can jump in and we don’t have to dive in after her.

The sweet combination of sun and water sent this little baby into snooze town.  I stripped her down into her birthday suit and placed her on my lap and she drifted off.  I sat and relaxed – soaking up the warmth joined by a perfect breeze blowing in from the coast.  I looked around and enjoyed the truly majestic view that I never really noticed nor cared about when I was a kid.

That night I laid down to sleep in my old childhood bedroom and stared at the stick-on glow in the dark stars I stuck all over the ceiling making a perfect replica of space when I was 10.  My baby slept deeply, she snuggled into my chest synchronizing her breath with mine and I thought to myself… this is crazy.  Here I am a grown woman sleeping in the bedroom I used to have slumber parties in once upon a time -  and now my baby daughter is asleep with me in this very room.  So often I feel like I’m still a kid, despite my growing population of gray hairs.  I just don’t know how I got here.  It’s as if I blinked and now I’m a wife and mother. Then I look at my sleeping baby and think, I am so happy.

an afternoon at the farm.

In a small country town within San Diego county lies a friendly little family farm called Bates Nut Farm.  I spent plenty of time here as a child.  My family would go here annually for picking out pumpkins in their Fall Pumpkin Patch that spanned for acres and acres.  Other times, we would go for antique car shows, craft fairs or sometimes just to feed grain to the sheep.  This time we went for no reason at all other than to simply enjoy it.

We brought along Berkeley and Dad’s new baby, Apollo.

On top of being a beautiful farm, Bates Nut Farm also has a shop full of wonderful treats.  I mean seriously, all of the nuts, jams, candies and dried fruits you could imagine.

My sweet next to some sweets.

Honestly, I wish I had a million photos of Sadie smiling and enjoying the grass and animals, but she slept the entire time.  So here’s all I got.

Sadie’s first day at school.

It was only a six day trip in San Diego at Grandma & Pop-pop’s – but we fit in enough excitement that it felt like we were there for weeks.  The first day there Pop-pop and I decided to go surprise Grandma in her classroom while the kids were at lunch.  I swear, Mom brought her Grand-baby into every single classroom and administration office so each and every staff member could “oooh” and “ahh” over her beautiful little Grand-daughter.  And oooh and ahh they did, and Mom swelled with pride.  It was a sweet moment.
