roll with it

I don’t really have a set ‘to-do’ list for all the new things I want to see up here in Northern California.  I’m sort of just rolling with the punches.  I’ve so enjoyed the places and things I’ve discovered this far and this weekend really upped the ante.

Our friend Kevin came up to visit over the weekend.  While we were deciding what we should do during his visit he suggested going to a bar that he heard of that was in the woods.  Devin and I both immediately discounted the idea.  We have a baby, obviously we aren’t going to go to a bar.  He assured us that it was a family friendly environment.  I was skeptical at best.  But decided to go with the flow and keep my fingers crossed that it wasn’t a huge disaster.

It wasn’t.

It was ah-maz-ing.

It started with a nice little downhill hike through the woods and ended up at this wooden cliff side beer lodge.  Upon arrival there were people scattered across the expansive deck drinking pints and playing board games.  And lo and behold, there were even a couple of families with kids and babies!

We ordered a pitcher of ice cold German beer, grabbed a board game from their collection and found a nice little spot on the deck to call home for the next several hours.

This opened up a new world of possibilities for me.  If there is this awesome kid friendly bar in the middle of the woods, how many other kid friendly adult activities are there out there that I haven’t yet discovered!!  I’m just relishing in the idea that I can get out and do things that are safe and fun for Sadie that don’t include a ball pit or finger paints.

Sadie spent her time playing monster and destroying our attempts to play a board game to the end.  She also walked around and made many new friends.  She even found a baby her age and they enjoyed a good old game of ‘make our mommies chase us’ together.  It was such a great experience, I’m looking forward to doing it again soon.

We also discovered some local joys over the weekend.  The winter weather is beginning to creep away and the sun has been making it’s appearance more and more.  The majority of my time living here has been chilly weather so far, so it’s a whole new ballgame in the warm weather.  We enjoyed a leisure walk to the duck pond, that turned into a beach visit, that turned into an ice cream shop stop, that turned into Sadie’s first ice cream cone.  Which naturally, turned into a sticky mess and a hot bath.

This whole weekend was kind of a roll with the punches kind of time.   You can’t plan everything perfectly, but someties that makes it better.  Y’know, when a baby falls asleep while your out to dinner.  Order a delicious margarita and just roll with the punches.

random acts of total cuteness

This is nothing more than a total shameless brag-fest I’m about to do.  I’m fully aware of what I’m doing and am going through with it anyways.  I can’t help it.  I’m so proud and so in love with my tiny little family that sometimes I just want to shout it off the rooftop.  So here I go.

We had a really cute weekend.

Saturday morning Sadie was hellbent on wearing 2 hats and her ducky robe for breakfast.  And of course I obliged.

That evening we walked to the beach to watch the sunset.  When the sun crept out of sight we gave a round of applause to the day, and then brushed off the sand and walked home in the dark.  (And, yes, I cut my hair off.)

Sadie ended her day with a bubble bath from dad.

Sunday morning brought on a beautiful day, so we decided to hitch up the baby trailer and go for a family bike ride for THREE HOURS before having company over for Super Bowl.  Sadie clearly found this very relaxing.

And there you have it.  My magical mystical child and our wonderful weekend.  Brag session over.

The laundry can wait.

It’s easy to fall behind on dishes, laundry and taking out the trash when you are carrying around a 14 pound attention hoarder all day.  It’s much easier to get chores done when there are two of you to do it, i.e. one person entertains the baby while the other cleans.  But Monday – Friday that task is almost impossible with Devin working from early morning into the night.  So, weekends have morphed into the allotted time in when the house gets a little face lift.  But not this weekend.

Sadly, Devin leaves us later this week to head to Austin, Texas for SXSW (the nerd portion of it, not the cool rock & roll part).   With his upcoming absence in mind we decided to really suck all that we can out of this past weekend and enjoy it.  The laundry can wait.

The weather was beautiful so we headed over the Aroyyo Seco in Pasadena for a walk.  Berkeley was stoked, and stayed a good 20 feet ahead of us the entire walk to lead the way.

Watching her prance like a deer through the streams reminded me of the last time I had gone walking there with her.  I was 7 months pregnant and Berkeley jumped into a deep part of the pond.  She can’t swim – so it was obvious she was going to sink and drown.  Without even a blink of an eye, I hauled butt and jumped into the pond and hurled my gigantic pregnant body into the deep end and dragged her out with one hand.  Mom strength.

Venice Beach is notoriously “touristy” but we thought it would be fun to walk around and people watch for the afternoon.  And it was a beautiful day for the beach.  It also was a beautiful day for crazy people and there was no shortage of them out.

Mr. Mom

Out of all the truly bizarre things we saw in Venice Beach, this was definitely the winner.  Ladies & Gentlemen – I give you, a TWO-HEADED TURTLE!!

To finish the day up… we ended at one of our favorite spots, Royal T.  This place is an art gallery/ tea room/ restaurant/ gift shop.  And it’s also the last place I ate before Sadie was born.  It got me a little emotional bringing her here for the first time.  I’m a sap, I know.

And to wrap it all up.  I have two random things to share. One – Sadie is starting to hold her bottle herself!

And two… I went out with my best girls the other night for dinner.  It was my first time EVER leaving Sadie since she’s been born.  I was a wreck.  Even though she was going to be with Daddy, I was still worried sick.  When I got home this note was taped to the front door.  Devin loves messing with me when he knows I’m freaked out about something.

*The Gold Room is a bar.

Thanks Devin.

eye candy.

Happy weekend! Just a quick check in… Sadie is now big enough for her exersaucer activity center and it is the cutest thing. Although there are a dozen different toys and objects for her to explore, she always seems to find her way back to the piano. All of the women in my family play piano, apparently Sadie is not going to be an exception.

Man, she’s cute.

Happy Weekend.

Hope everyone is enjoying their weekend so far.  Ours has been warm and wonderful.  Today we took a long family walk for breakfast, and made homemade crab ceviche and sun tea for lunch.  Dee-lish!

I hope everyone’s weekend so far is going beautifully.
